Watch that Pressure!

Pressure can be a very tricky thing. PSI or pounds per square inch is the common unit of measure for pressure in this country. Many other countries measure in bar pressure units. Pressure is the amount of force a liquid or gas exerts on the walls of the container holding it. PSI is defined as the force of one pound-force applied to an area of one square inch. To put it in layman terms, if you had a water line operating 65 PSI flowing through a 1" diameter piece of tubing and you looked at the amount of pressure being applied to a 1" long section of the side of that tubing, it would be 65 pounds.

When looking at real-world applications and how pressure is applied to them, there is an important old saying to remember. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. I have been questioned in the past when someone is buying a clamp fitting, what is the bursting pressure of your tubing? If we look at an example of a 2" diameter clamp tee, the bursting pressure for 2" x .065" wall stainless steel T304 round tubing A249 at ambient temperature is approximately 4,550 PSI. That is with a certain amount of safety margin built in. However, the pressure rating for a standard 2" single pin clamp AC13HH (13MHHM) at 70 degrees Fahrenheit is approximately only 450 PSI. In most quick disconnect systems, your connection points are the weak links in the chain, not the tube wall itself.

It is critical to keep this in mind, miscalculating your pressure rating could cause a blow out at one of your connection points, potentially causing serious injury to someone and at a minimum, suffering a loss of product and production time. It should also be noted that properly maintaining your connection points and changing your gaskets out regularly, help to assist in maximizing your pressure ratings.
